The future exploration of the Moon will be made much easier if astronauts can locate large quantities of water ice. It can be used for propellant, drinking, breathing, growing food, etc. The list goes on and on. There are thought to be vast reserves of water ice down the permanently shadowed craters near the Moon's poles, but how can you tell for sure without exploring them? ESA is working on a special rover that would be powered by a laser, to operate in the darkness of these craters to search for water.
