Giant Stars and the Ultimate Fate of the Sun

When the Sun dies, it'll bloat up as a red giant and engulf the orbits of Mercury and Venus (and maybe even the Earth). But astronomers disagree on precisely what'll happen during the Sun's end of life. A new survey has studied 191 giant stars, characterizing many other sunlike stars going through the red giant stage. With more detailed observations of these stars, astronomers will have a better idea of what lies in store for the future of the Solar System.
