A Very Powerful Solar Storm Hit the Earth Back in 1582

A Portuguese scribe wrote in 1582 that a great fire appeared in the sky and lasted three nights. This wasn't fire, of course, but a very powerful aurora, surprising to see as far south as Portugal. In fact, the storm was so strong, there are records of people seeing it as far south as Florida, Egypt, and southern Japan. Storms like this and the more famous Carrington Event were harmless and beautiful back then, but they can cause great damage to our electronically connected society. Finding more events like this in history is helpful to predict when they might happen in the future.
