A Plan to Store Seeds, Spores, Eggs and Sperm on the Moon for Safekeeping

Although humanity is thriving here on Earth today, all species eventually go extinct - even us. Scientists have proposed a radical idea to shift genetic material from Earth to a vault on the Moon, where it could be preserved for eons. This "Lunar Ark" would be buried into a lava tube on the Moon, where it's protected from the radiation and temperature variations. Genetic samples buried there could last billions of years without damage, allowing future humans (or Europan space whales) to uncover the samples and replenish the Earth after a catastrophe.
