How did the dinosaurs die 65 million years ago? Although there's some evidence of volcanic annihilation, most scientists now believe the enormous Chixalub Crater in Mexico tells the story of a massive impact, which ignited the world's forests and filled the skies with smoke and dust. Dinosaurs were probably hurled into orbit during the event. But what actually smashed into the Earth? Most planetary scientists assumed it was an asteroid, but there's intriguing evidence that it was actually a comet.
