New Hubble Image Shows Dark Cocoons Where New Stars are Forming



Stars form from giant molecular clouds of hydrogen enriched with heavier elements leftover from dying stars. A new image captured by the Hubble Space Telescope shows one of these stellar nurseries in action. There are newly forming stars nestled inside these cocoons of gas and dust, which can be so thick they obscure our view of the stars entirely. As the star's fusion gets going, powerful stellar winds blast away the dust, revealing the star to the Universe.
